Beautiful illustrations. I have heard that the images in this publication (there are several out there of Audubon's birds) most closely reproduces the Havell prints as these images reproduce all marginalia, inscriptions, and numbering. Some of the greens are a little brownish. Having not examined the original Havell Audubon prints (which I hope to do some day) I am only comparing these reproductions with those in the 4 other Audubon books I own. But not to take away from this book one iota. There is a warmth to these images not seen in other publications that makes you just want to curl up and enjoy them. They look like art work, which of course they are! The images have a slightly antique appearance to them, which again is probably reflective of the original Havell prints, paper and technique. This out of print book can be purchased for a very reasonable price. For any Audubon bird art lover, this is a must buy. Just buy it.Product details

When i was growing up in the 50's - 60's this was the family's official "bird book". Any time we saw a different bird at the feeder this was "the" reference book we'd go to to identify it. As a kid I used to spend hours going through the dozens of plates and reading some of the hundreds of articles. When the family finally moved in the 70's from the old homestead a cousin saw to it that it got "stored" in the garage for a few months - where it subsequently got wet and ruined. Nice going Pete! Not just the loss of a good book but also a lot of sentimental value. 30 years later, thanks to the internet, don't you know copies of that great old book can again be found and at very reasonable prices! This is a great reference book just for the illustrations alone. Everyone is familiar with Audubon's art but I'll take these paintings to his - or anyone else - any day of the week. These illustrations are some of the best clear and detailed pictures you will find while still looking natural, they are second to none. They are invaluable for identifying of hundreds of species in the US though they don't include everything, maybe around 80% of the most common (at the time it was printed). The hundreds of additional articles and b&w photos can make for fascinating reading and reference. And as another reviewer noted, several pages of life size egg illustrations (actual photos) are something you won't find anywhere else. I managed to find 3 copies of this for myself and my two sisters and they were ever grateful to have their own copies once again of this great classic. This book, if it were printed new today like this in hardcover would have to be close to a hundred dollars or more and probably very well worth it. These old relics are going for a fraction of that so you just can't go wrong.
I had no prior knowledge of the history of this book (being from Australia), it was only a chance glimpse of some close-ups of the artist's work in a nature documentary that caused me to search this out. Because there have been myriad versions published, it took me a while to decide on this one from the publishing house Sterling. I can find nothing to complain about, the book's nearly 450 large pages are totally devoted to stunning reproductions, one to each page, with only an index at the back and a brief 2 page forward at the front. The paper is a beautiful soft matt card which is totally sympathetic to the water-based ink & wash colors of the originals.
The state of the art digital scans (or photography) direct from the originals reveals sharp detail and harmonious balance of tone, from hard blacks to delicate creams. The order of the plates does not seem to follow species lines so there is surprise and variety at each page turn. It is the sort of book to give years of pleasure and is idealy suited to opening at random as the book in whole is too much to take in all at once.
Each and every page is a perfectly planned & realised work of art and it is a pleasure to take a magnifying glass and scan the appreciative eye over the finely detailed images within. A lovely calming way to spend 15-30 mins.
How one individual was able to do all that trecking & searching in the wilds, observing, hunting, drawing all those birds and then produce so many prints of such equal un-rushed beauty is a mind spin in itself.
